BIO ~ Merike Saarniit

Merike Saarniit's career before getting totally involved in fibers was mostly academic and in the financial realms. After starting, Merike Saarnitt has owned and operated Carolina Homespun for 10 years, she sold that business and concentrated on dyeing yarns (Liisu Yarns) and teaching fiber related workshops around the country. Saarniit's former apprentice, Kelly Eells, took over the dyeing and has gone on to join The Unique Sheep with which Merike is is still affiliated to the extent that she provides them with some of her patterns. For the past dozen years or so, Merike Saarniit has been teaching workshops, at most Stitches events, Vogue Knitting Live, Sock Summit, Knit Nation (in London England), John C Campbell Folk School, and for a variety of guilds and yarn shops across the country

Books ~ Merike Saarniit

Merike Saarniit has had a number of patterns published in Knitter's magazine, an article about spinning sock yarns in Spin-Off magazine, an in-depth article on Estonian Patent Stitches in INKnitter's magazine, and an article about Estonia in Yarn Market News magazine. Merike Saarniit was one of the featured fiber artists in the book Handpaint Country. The book Merike has been working on for the past few years is still in the works.

Education ~ Merike Saarniit

Merike has a BA in Studio Art with a minor in History. She had hoped to complete my MA in Guidance and Counseling so she could become an Art Therapist but life got in the way. So, teaching knitting (and spinning, weaving, etc) - all involving color, texture, design - is her form of providing Art Therapy in a roundabout way.
